2020

Key words: body, form, textiles, knitting, protection, aesthetic language, wearable, silhouette, movement

  • Focusing on the female body and looking at the areas that are naturally protected.

  • Exaggerating the areas that need more protection. Challenging the traditional aesthetic of the female silhouette, and pushing the potential of form in relationship to the body.

  • The body is both strong and fragile. It is made of many folds and pleats.

As humans it is common to fall, resulting in injuries. Through the creation of an alternative aesthetic language for protective apparel, padding is added to the areas on the body that lack protection through the manipulation of how materials and garments are formed. This is done by knitting the material in shape, protection and volume is added into the structure of garment. Padding is added through layers of knit created with pockets and folds that are filled on the inside of the garment with 3D printed sheets constructed in the pattern of a knit. Padding to protect the knees, hips, elbows and wrists.

Through movement and a new perspective on padded apparel the body is free to explore movement, style and emotion.
